Before I took this course, I did not expect to have learned nearly as much as I did. I feel that I have gained a firm understanding of the english language and different methods of teaching it. I was always unsure of my knowledge in english grammar but this course has given me a strong foundation of the different tenses, parts of speech, conditionals, etc… that is necessary to know in order to teach others. Also, I have learned more about teaching english than I thought was possible. I am now familiar with all the different types of learners, the problems students encounter, language levels, different skills, lesson plans and how to confront any issues in the classroom. I feel that I am better prepared and overall more knowledgeable and therefore I will be successful in the classroom.
I think one of the main things this course has taught me, that I will put into action, is how to interact with students and establish rapport. I will do this by understanding cultural and individual differences, being sensitive to needs and interests of all students and by motivating and inspiring them to learn. I plan on coming prepared to lessons with numerous ideas of activities and exercises the class can do that will keep them motivated and on their feet. I now know how to make ESA lesson plans and I will use the different structures (straight-arrow, boomerang, etc…) to create dynamic lessons that won't bore the students and will target all the different skills they need to work on. I will also draw on personal experiences and authentic materials to give students real life examples of english to make sure they are using the language in all forms. I plan on creating an inviting atmosphere in the classroom so students are not scared to speak in english and therefore have the confidence to not only speak but read, write, listen and have conversations with others. Most importantly, I will assure that students are always practicing and improving their english.
