Taking this tefl course has proven far more valuable than I had initially thought. Although I had presumptuously seen this as a credential first and a resource second, I quickly came to realize that I had much to gain from the program. Despite the fact that I am a native english speaker, I took remarkably little notice of the intricacies of the language itself. It's been an eye-opening experience moving past the simple knowledge of simple nouns and verbs, towards the complex tangle of things previously disregarded as “intuitive” to my use. Such insights have (hopefully) helped me gain a better perspective for the struggles of those learning english as a foreign language as even I had to struggle with some of the concepts!
The main message this course imparted to me was that knowing how to use something is indeed very different from knowing how to explain something. This is an insight which will help me empathize with the challenges of my future students, no doubt. Furthermore, it has made me think far more thoroughly about how I should go about trying to convey this knowledge. Not only with regards to content, but method and media as well. I hope to creatively maximize my lessons in order to provide superior instruction through comprehensible and varied instruction which I would not necessarily have considered before having taken this course.
