I have taught Language and Literature to Filipino students for the past years. Being exposed to the language, Filipino students already have a good grasp on english. Textbooks used from pre-school are in english already. Thus, it was not that difficult to teach the language topic-wise. However, it had been observed recently that more and more foreigners come here to study. Koreans, japanese, Africans, etc have chosen philippines to pursue studies mainly because people here are more or less equipped with english skills. Although the foreign students can keep up with the other subjects such as Math and Science, they perform very poorly in english. This posed as a great challenge to us teachers, finding ways to bridge the gap. We also noticed that our proven approach to regular students was not effective to the foreign students. Hence, they were put in another class during english periods, and teachers were encouraged to pursue efl studies. I must say that taking this course has equipped me with genuine skills how to handle efl learners. efl Lesson planning is quite different compared to regular english classes: that vocabulary and grammar should always be present in each one of them. Although similar, the approach can still be different. For starters, we should revamp our lesson planning style and adapt the ESA style of lesson planning for efl learners. Classifying student's level is a must as well before delivering the lesson plan. Games and collaborative activities presented in the modules can be helpful in executing the lesson. All in all, paradigm shift should be a welcomed challenge in order to be a better teacher.
