It has been quite a thought-provoking course. This course, in my opinion, went beyond the generalities of not only attaining teaching skills but also challenges the prospective teacher on their own grammar knowledge as well. Overall, the course had a good mixture of focus between teaching application of procedures and grammar.
By taking this course, I have personally gained the most in learning about the Straight Arrow, Boomerang, and Patchwork ESA methods, in preparing lesson plans, in selecting suitable text for teaching receptive skills and in the use of games to teach productive skills, the intonation usage and, of personal interest, the phonemic alphabet since I have never used this dictionary feature myself, and in the effective use of course books. The remainder of the course which focuses on the grammar points of english has quickened my own knowledge of the grammar structures for the various tenses too.
We have already established our residence in Romania and I plan to help Romanians improve their english grammar skills. What I have learned is that english is taught in the public elementary schools here but in speaking with Romanian adults who speak english the consensus is that they feel inadequate with their grammar. I have already two people who told me they want to know english better.
At this time, I would like to apply my newfound knowledge of teaching english by becoming involved in a language exchange. As the partner of someone who is looking to improve their english skills, I now feel prepared to be able to explain grammar points clearly and how to check understanding of those grammar points so that my partner leaves our meeting knowing that they have received what they came for. Secondly, it would be in my best interest to gain experience as an english teacher through volunteer work since my visa does not allow me to earn an income at this time. The volunteer work would involve working with an organization here in the Transylvania region of Romania.
