Five Important Qualities of a Good teacher: I will begin with what I believe to be the top five qualities of a good teacher: 1. The teacher should be kind and patient. 2. The teacher should be able to motivate learners. 3. The teacher should have good knowledge of the subject being taught. 4. The teacher should be able to involve all the students throughout the lesson equally. 5. The teacher should be able to recognize students' weaknesses and attend to the weaknesses giving the required attention to help. I think that reason for my first choice is formed from personal opinion and from past experience. It also combines with the second quality in the list. I think that a kind and patient teacher has a greater ability to motivate students and will have a better interaction with the students in the class. The third on the list also seems to be a little self explanatory. A teacher without a good knowledge of the subject being taught will not be able to competently teach. The fourth quality on the list is just about fairness for the students. A teacher who involves the entire class in the lesson without leaving student out, or feeling left out, will also have a better interaction with the class. A fair teacher will also be able to motivate students better. The fifth quality on the list is also an important part of the teaching process. Recognizing weakness as a teacher gives the teacher the ability to address the weakness and help with problems either individually or as a class depending on what is required. As you can probably tell from my previous statements about the qualities required to make a good teacher, I feel that a good teacher most importantly needs to be a good motivator. Motivated students will be more inclined to be good learners. Motivating students can come from a range of methods whether it be from being a kind and fair teacher, a teacher that shows enthusiasm about the subject or actually just being an effective teacher through knowing how and when to perform the different roles of the teacher throughout the lessons. Five Important Roles of the teacher: Deciding on important roles was quite difficult as all the roles of the teacher on their own play have their time in the classroom at some point. Not every lesson requires every role but definitely throughout a course or year especially when a varied and interesting class is being taught. Of course, the management or controlling role of the teacher is one of the most important roles of the teacher without these skills the teacher will not be able to lead the class through lessons or the activities. The role of the controller is basically to control the students and keep the class moving smoothly in the direction to reach the teaching goals. The second role I think is most important is the role of the teacher as an organizer. This role is exactly what the title suggests: organizing the students. This could be in the form of giving instructions, organizing teamwork/pair work/individual tasks, getting the activities started and bringing them to a close. It is as important as the management role to be clear and make sure the students know what is to be done and how it is to be done. The third role I think is very important and commonly used is that of the tutor. This role is like the organizer and controller but in a more personal environment. The teacher can help and give guidance to students either as a group, individual or pair possibly to those that the teacher has observed to be going off track or struggling with understanding either the material or how things are to be done. I think the role of the teacher as a resource and facilitator is another important role for an effective teacher. This role is providing activities for the students to get on with learning by themselves but being available if any help is required during the actives either for information, assistance or guidance in the tasks. Although this is a more hands off teaching role, providing interesting activities and helps the students to get on with studying on their own instead of always being focused on the teacher. The fifth role of the teacher that I think is one of the most important was that of the observer and monitor. This role includes observing the class to watch the progression of activities. Whether this be the effectiveness of the activity, timing or if students are completing the tasks well. This role is usually with the teacher at a distance and picking up on mistakes to be corrected or things to be praised. Effective monitoring of the classroom should involve stepping back from the students and just letting them get on with the work. During speaking activities a closer perspective could be taken to clearly listen to the students' speech while trying to avoid distracting the students.
