When I subscribed to the tesol online course through ITTT, little did I know what I was letting myself in for. I am impressed by how structured the modules are and the efficiency with which we, the students, are given feedback and assistance. I have spoken english all my life although I am a Maltese national and also fluent in the Maltese language. I was taught english grammar at school and also studied english at a more advanced level at college – although that also involved a great deal of english literature. When I started tesol, I found myself sitting on the opposite side of the fence. I knew the grammar – I know how to speak english – BUT, it is different when one has to teach it! tesol has been an eye opener. I now know what it means to teach, rather than be taught, english. What I also found captivating is the way that lesson plans are structured. This is a far cry from the way we were taught english as children (and this is why I chose “The Role of a teacher” as my choice of subject for Task 3). When I was at school, teaching was teacher-centred. I found tesol to be quite refreshing with its student-centred approach and the effort that is made to making the learning process interesting, motivating and captivating for students and teachers alike. My reasons for starting this tesol course are bound to my plans to leave Malta and move to Portugal. My plan is for me to move there (one day) and become a teacher of english. I must admit that my niche would be business english due to my past career and academic background. And, I am going to consider extending my course of studies so that I am also qualified to teach business english. That is where my affinity lies. So, really and truly, I still have one more step to go before I embark on a new career. I intend to also contact some local institutions so that I can spend some time observing tefl teachers in action. Perhaps, I would even be allowed to take over some classes on my own with an observer present. So, putting into action what I have learned is starting with contacting local institutions that teach english to foreign students. I already have contacts. Summer is an especially busy time for them. This will hopefully help me gain some hands-on experience to prepare me for my new adventures and future in Portugal.
