This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
When I first began this tefl course
, I was relatively unsure of what to expect in terms of course content and the difficulty level of the units. Having said this, I feel that the content impressively covers a wide variety of topics (from child psychology to lesson planning .etc.) and the layout makes for interesting learning with regard to the alternating of teaching and language skill components. I found some of the units – particularly the grammar sections – to be quite challenging but also rewarding in the sense that I come from an english
literature background and certainly need to refine my knowledge of english
grammar. The many lesson plan tasks will hold me in good stead in my tefl
career in that I will use the same lesson plan structure and the skills gleaned from practise lesson plans to create a well-structured and varied learning programme for my students. I also feel that the course has provided me with many useful ideas for in-class activities, as I tend to favour role-play activities without thinking about what other sorts of tasks would work well in a classroom situation .e.g. “Hangman”; “Pictionary”. Further, as I have only taught in the university system, the course has shown me which strategies to employ when teaching different age groups of learners. For instance, with young learners
there is a need for age appropriate activities and sound classroom management. I have also gained insight into how I, as a native english
speaker, will need to teach english
grammar, vocabulary and conversational skills to foreign language speakers. It is one thing being able to speak a language, but it is quite another thing to teach second language learners how to speak it. All in all, I would recommend the ITTT
course to anyone wishing to embark on a career in teaching english
to foreign learners.
