This course offered a detailed overview of what teaching english really involves. There are so many factors to consider while teaching esl students and it's not just as easy as standing in a classroom and speaking english. I realize that to be a good teacher, you must be prepared, keep the class interesting and also have patience. You set the mood for the students and if you are not well mannered or cater to your students needs, it will not be a productive learning or teaching experience for anyone. If we offer the english language to our students in a level appropriate, appealing, and fun way, our students will have motivation to learn; which is what every teacher's goal should be.
As a current esl teacher, this course helped me plan and prepare for my current classes. When I was stuck for ideas, I searched the websites suggested and also adapted the lesson plans I created for my units and applied them to my classes. This course also made me realize I should always be searching for new ideas and methods to introduce english to my students. I realize anything in my life, books, movies, magazines, and activities can be introduced into the classroom and not to just rely on the curriculum books to provide the majority of learning aids. This course also helped me realize that working with children, I need to always have patience. They are very needy for attention, excitement and games, but it is in their nature, and knowing this I can be a better teacher by adapting to their needs and wants. english is very difficult, but hopefully with the ideas from this course, I can create a more open, and fun environment for my current and future students.
