I have personally gained a lot from taking this course. First, I overcame the fear of taking an on-line tefl course. Before taking this tefl course, I had anxiety about taking a class on-line. Upon taking this course, my anxiety subsided. It helped to have an on-line tutor because I felt that I was communicating with a real person rather than with a machine. Peter's quick replies and encouraging feedback helped to motivate me to learn tefl skills. As a result, I found that I was able to pace and structure my learning. The course has taught me a lot about self-organizing and self-discipline. Second, I discovered the answer to my question, “Do I need to know the native-tongue of the students I'm teaching?” I learned that, through the ESA approach, speaking the native tongue of the student is actually discouraged in class. Thus, I now feel more confident about teaching an english class to students whose native tongue is other than english. Third, I actually learned to understand the rules of english grammar in greater detail as a result of taking this course. For example, the detail of the grammar lessons concerning the usage of the tenses was even more in depth than in my english grammar courses at University. Fourth, the course covered a lot on communication skills, such as patience, sensitive and being observant rather than lecturing when needed. In addition, the course allowed me to exercise creativity, which I think is something that is a great addition to the effectiveness of a class. This was evident in the two videos that I watched, which I enjoyed very much. Finally, the course covered many different teaching groups, such as adults, children, business clients and instruction from beginner to advanced levels. As a result, I feel confident to teach a diverse range of classes. I would like to start my new career off by tutoring students on a 1 on 1 basis, or in small groups. I will offer to tutor students who seek help in improving their english speaking and writing skills. I am currently a teacher's Aide at Silicon Valley University, based in Santa Clara, California. I work for Dr. Bob McQueen, PMP who teaches Project Management at SVU and also teaches Operation's Management. Nearly all the students that attend SVU do not have english as their native tongue. I would also be interested in teaching business english, since I have a minor in business and a major (B.S.) in Industrial Technology. I have worked for many years doing administrative work, including typing up presentations and business correspondence. Perhaps after I have gained a lot of experience as a teacher, (5 years or more) I would consider teaching english abroad. As I mentioned in “Unit 19”, I currently need to stay close to my parents who are elderly and need my support. However, looking forward to teaching abroad in the future seems very exciting.
