Teaching english as a foreign language is a unique experience for teachers all over the world. I, for one, have dreamt of teaching english in South Korea for over a year and it did not take me long to realize that I have both little training in teaching and my english skills have not been refined in years. While I have been told teaching english as a foreign language is possible without taking any additional training, I felt both guilty that I would not teach to the best of my ability without it and more so, worried that I may not be hired without any training. Now that I am near completion of the tefl course, I truly believe there are so many more reasons to take the course than when I first began. The course went beyond my expectations and taught me not only how to teach and english grammar, but how to teach the english language confidently and successfully. I must admit, the opportunity to earn a higher monthly wage had a significant influence on my initial decision to enrol in the tefl course. While this is still a major benefit of taking the course, it is much less significant now. In addition, I was delighted at the idea of having completed an internationally recognized course beyond my university degree that I could add to my resume and CV. Those ideas, while both important are now secondary to why I would suggest any teacher to take the tefl course. The tefl course prepares you for exactly what it stands for: Teaching english as a Foreign Language. Primarily, it teaches you how to teach. From classroom discipline to different class sizes, to using different equipment to lesson planning, the tefl course provides a strong platform that teachers can use to establish and maintain successful classroom. The course is realistic and never fails to mention that every teaching experience is unique, and teachers must get a feel for the classroom and use every opportunity as a learning experience themselves. english is the second word in the acronym tefl, a language that is in high demand internationally. While we take for granted having learned the language from birth, english can be a very complicated language for those who have never learned it and the tefl course prepares its teachers well by breaking down the language into grammar, reading, writing and speaking. Most importantly for me, this course had a strong emphasis on grammar, which as a canadian we are expected to perfect before high school and then it is never mentioned again! This course was re-awakened me to the complexity of the english language, and taught me how to teach it in the most uncomplicated way. As a ‘Foreign Language', is the last two letters making up the acronym tefl and is perhaps the most difficult aspect of the course for teachers to wrap their heads around. As previously stated, native english speakers tend to overlook the intricacies of the language but tefl allows those who are taking the course to grasp the language from a perspective of a non-native speaker. The tefl course offers teachers the necessary fundamentals of teaching english as a foreign language. I would highly recommend any fellow teacher to enrol in the course because it is interesting and extremely valuable not only for the teacher, but for the students as well. As a beginner esl teacher, I am thankful that I had the opportunity to learn and grow from the tefl course and I am certain that has put me on the right path towards being the best teacher that I can be.
