This course has been an invaluable step in my process to becoming a tefl teacher. I have learned deeper insights into areas I was already familiar with, as well as discovered many more areas I had never considered. Also, this course has better prepared me for what to expect in future situations during my teaching career. Some of the more interesting aspects to me personally were the units that covered teaching techniques and classroom tips, as this was the area in which I had the most to gain. I also predict that the reference tools provided during the course will prove a great and often used resource when I am actually in the classroom. In regards to some of the areas I was already familiar with, such as grammar and actual english application, I feel the course has been a great reminder tool to refresh my knowledge. The course also delved deeper in to these areas than I had anticipated and even provided me with information that I had not considered before in regards to detailed grammar study, sentence structures, and tenses. In the future, I plan to put this new knowledge into action by using the course materials to help me plan for classes, assess students, prepare a classroom with necessary equipment, organize and control classes, and to provide an engaging atmosphere. Lastly, I believe the course has unexpectedly caused me to reflect on my own desires as a teacher and to be better prepared to select an area of teaching in which I will excel.
By far my strongest learning curve has been in the area of grammar. As a native english speaker who can't remember actually having a grammar lesson beyond what is a noun, verb and adjective I found the grammar section difficult. Focus on this area has allowed me to understand the importance of teaching how to use these terms to help support students understand why a sentence is correct or incorrect, beyond “it sounds or doesn't sound right.” It has also been useful to think about how I can teach these skills in an interesting manner through engage and activate activities. I feel that it is particularly important that students are presented with the opportunity to activate their learning through activities that are relevant and meaningful to the student.
