There are plus sides to both teaching groups and teaching one to one. Although being taught alongside your peers can be more comfortable you can also find that comfort in getting to know a tutor that can cater to your individual needs. Both approaches can be fun and interesting but there are advantages and disadvantages to both. One of the things to take into consideration is freedom. When teaching one to one you have the freedom to slow down, stray away from the topic, or work on your student's individual needs. In the classroom there has to be more structure; you have a syllabus to follow, guidelines from the school, and you cannot switch topics all the time for one student. In the classroom you have to work as one unit doing your best to make sure everyone is soaking up the information and staying on track. This could make progress slower, opposed to where you make entire lesson plans around one person's goals and make your only focus them understanding the information. An advantage for classroom teaching would be activities and class participation. You can play games while tutoring but you need to find one where the student plays alone or a two player that you can play with the student. A student playing alone seems a little harder to make entertaining ad a student playing with a teacher can cause challenges of its own. It would be demoralizing to always lose to the teacher, so they are forced to pretend to try hard, let them win, give a head start, or give extra points for a students score. I think games I the classroom with your peers would be much more fun for students. Another issue is building relationships. In the classroom there is potential to be one unit and work toward student teacher relationships or group relationships, but there might be some students that shy away from the group and do not have the confidence to show their full potential. In one to one teaching I think it might be easier to build your students confidence. For a shy person talking and practicing with one person who has gained their trust would be easier than talking I front of a group they feel uncomfortable with. This person would be the center of attention and hopefully more willing to express needs or ask for more help on something they are not understanding, rather than just moving on to the next lesson confused. Access to supplies is a factor as well. In the classroom you may be supplied with coursebooks, worksheets, videos, dictionaries, and random books for reference. tutoring you have to supply everything yourself. This can be easy if you have tutored for a while and have collected supplies, but if you are new you will need to invest. The plus side to investing yourself in items is you can make one thing go a long way. If you wanted your one on one student to study a movie you could just send it home with them as homework. You can also use things over and over again with different students. In conclusion, I think one to one is slightly more beneficial to the learning aspect because the individual student is the main focus and you can work everything around them to make sure they understand completely. It is not in every person's means to get a private tutor or students may not have the time. Learning in the classroom is fortunately beneficial as well because of the teamwork, social aspects, and help of the staff from the school. I would say as long as the teacher is committed and cares about what the students are learning either would be a success.
