This course proved to me that I was definitely on the right track in regards to my approach to teaching english as a foreign language. I had never taken a formal course in teaching or tefl/tesol before, but through my four years of experience teaching english in japanese middle schools, I feel that I've learned over time some of the things this course teaches within its 120 hours. It's good to know that I'm at least a somewhat effective teacher, and this course helped me become even better. I started putting the things I learned into action as soon as I understood them. For example, when I read that choosing a few students to repeat vocabulary individually after practicing through choral work, I started doing so in my classes. The students enjoy it to a degree and I also can now clearly hear what sounds are most difficult for students to reproduce. Not to mention I can now make some of the lazier students put a bit more effort into the class by calling them out directly. From this course, I have definitely gained more confidence as a teacher. I can organize my lessons better, manage my classroom and its students more effectively, and clearly state to my fellow teachers what could make our english classes more fun and effective. I also realized that some of the better teachers in my school apply tefl skills taught throughout this course in their classes. Those teachers apply the strong student/weak student buddy system, provide a good amount of listening practice, and use a lot of pair work and conversation in classes just to name a few things that they do regularly. The students in these classes feel more comfortable with using english and benefit the most from their required english course. I definitely feel that I'm a better teacher thanks to this course.
