Classroom management skills are one of the most important skills to learn for a new teacher, especially if teaching children. It can mean the difference between a disorganized, chaotic class, and a well behaved class where the students actually learn. In my years of teaching, I was exposed to many different teaching styles. The style that I developed, took years of experience. While it may seem firm to some and may not agree with every student, a majority of the students I taught improved in their english abilities quite a bit in my class. First, I am going to examine some reasons why classroom management may be an issue. Sometimes, students are craving attention, and they will do anything to get it: positive or negative. Unfortunately, a lot of students find it easier to get negative attention rather than positive. It is much easier to make someone mad than to make them happy. Another reason that students may miss behave in a classroom is that they are simply bored. Classes that are not interesting to students can become very difficult classes to teach. Sometimes, children have undiagnosed attention deficit conditions, such as ADD. Lastly, students sometimes just want to talk with friends! All of these are issues that can be addressed by the teacher. It is my feeling, that it is imperative that a teacher expresses the fact that they are the dominant person in the class on the first day. children can get a sense very quickly of whether or not a teacher is lax and can be easily controlled. On the first day, the teacher should smile, but remain firm. They should also go over the class rules and informed the children that negative behavior will be punished, but positive behavior will be rewarded. Remind the children that there are rules and as long as they are followed, the class will be a lot of fun! When speaking, it is important to use a stern voice on the first day. Speak clearly, and if the class starts to get out of hand, speak louder, but lower the tone of your voice. A voice that rises in tone signifies desperation. The children will detect this and often the situation will get worse. When a student is craving attention, often, they will just need a little encouragement on their work. If the student is craving a disproportionate amount of attention, and not allowing you to be attentive to other students, it is often wise to try and get the student to be your assistant in the classroom. This will often give the student the attention they crave! Students that are bored in class will take a little work on the teacher's part. It is often wise to bring in extra material for those students who finish their work early. If the student finds the material boring, it may be wise to revise your lesson plans. If only one student is bored, it may be a good idea to slightly alter any activities the class performs into something more interesting for that student. If the student has an undiagnosed condition such as ADD, it is usually wise to discuss this with the other staff at the school or the parent if possible. If the school or parents refuse to do anything about the condition, the situation can be handled the same as a child who wants to just talk with friends. Students who are too social in the class frequently just need a new seating arrangement. Often, when students are seated away from their friends, they are able to focus much more clearly. As a reward for good behavior, remind students that have been moved that they can return to their old seats alongside their friends if they continue to behave. One last recommendation is to use positive reinforcement whenever possible. This can be in the form of stars next to student’s names on the board, or a sheet in the classroom to keep track of positive activities. It is also recommended to have some sort of reward for the students to work toward. While this is in no way a complete guide, I hope it is helpful for new teachers!
