I have personally gained much in taking this course. In the first place it helped me to restore confidence in the sense that as a non-native english teacher I relocated to the U.A.E and worked for a while before the economic recession affected Europe and other parts of the world. This consequently resulted to an influx of people from Europe seeking employment as english teachers with the result that those who are not trained as english teachers are preferred by employers for the mere fact that they are native english speakers. Realizing the competition in the labor market as regards esl teachers, I decided to enroll for an esl summer program but it was so ‘sandwiched' in nature that lectures were held from 9.00am-5.00pm daily with so many lesson plans to be prepared against the following day with the result that one had very little sleep each day. Probably as a result of insufficient time, my lesson plans were never commended by our moderator and that really discouraged me and made me felt I wasn't really good enough. I broke down with my health after two weeks and missed lessons for about 4 days and as a result of the intensive nature of the course I couldn't cope when I recovered, as much work has been done within that period and I withdrew. It was in my desperate need and disappointment trying to see what I can do in a foreign land in terms of a career, that I launched a search into the internet. I saw a lot of courses offered online but having been a teacher all my life, my interest was mostly on education and that was how I stumbled across tesol online. It was the first time I learnt about it as I previously heard about CELTA only. I started with the course and to my utmost surprise I started getting positive remarks from my tutor on my completed task works and that in a way restored my confidence that I wasn't really that bad as I had previously thought. The systematic method of training in various areas of english language such as grammar and the lesson plans are great and have given me a different perspective on how best they can be utilized in the classroom. The course covers various aspects that are useful in teaching english. The lesson materials are detailed, well planned and easy to comprehend. The wealth of knowledge I gained from them are in no doubt an asset which I would put into use in the classroom when the opportunity comes my way to make me a much more effective english language teacher than I have ever been. The intensive methods of creative activate exercises, for various topics will definitely be put into use. To the ITTT team and my tutor (Darren) in particular, I remain ever grateful for the guidance, corrections and useful suggestions on different occasion while the course lasted, as well as for this wonderful opportunity to improve my teaching career.
