Why complete a tefl course (8)There are many reasons as to why someone might complete a tefl course. I completed this course in order to learn how to teach english, and also to improve my chances of getting the job I want. For some people a tefl certification may be required for the job they want. Even though many jobs teaching english as a foreign language do not require any type of certification, I believe that anyone who is planning on getting a tefl job should complete a tefl course. One of the reasons I think people should complete a tefl course before getting a tefl job, is because of the difference between teaching english as a foreign language and any other type of teaching. When I first started looking at the requirements for teaching english in japan, I noticed that many job posting mentioned that applicants with previous teaching experience were more likely to receive the job. While some of these job posting also mentioned that applicants with a tefl certification would be given preference over those without a certification, most job posting seemed to prefer those with teaching experience and no certification over those with a certification and no experience. I can certainly understand why teaching experience would be useful before acquiring a tefl job but I think completing a tefl course is equally important. Even if someone planning on teaching english as a foreign language previously taught english to native english speakers, teaching english to people whose native language is not english requires a very different approach. Most english teachers understand grammar very well, but that does not necessarily mean that they will be able to explain it to students who are still learning english. It is also unlikely that they will have had to give instructions to someone whose language ability is far beneath theirs. Since tefl jobs require a teaching method that is different than the method used in most teaching jobs, I believe that even those with previous teaching experience could greatly benefit from a tefl course. Another reason I think people hoping to acquire a tefl job should first complete a tefl course, is because I feel that they owe it to their future students to try to be the best teacher possible. I understand that many people looking to get a tefl job may simply desire an adventure, but I do not think that should be used as an excuse not to do their job to the best of their ability. Part of the reason I want to teach english in japan is because of my interest in japanese culture and my desire to visit japan; however, I understand that if I get a job there I will have to make teaching my first priority. I have worked with plenty of people who put very little effort into their work and would only do what was absolutely necessary in order to keep their job. I have always believed that people should try to be the best at what they do even if their job seems insignificant, but a tefl job is definitely significant! While some students may never find a reason to use english outside of the classroom, other students may hope to get a better job or even study abroad after learning english. A teacher owes it to their students to do the best they can at their job, since their teaching ability could have an impact on their students' futures. By completing a tefl course a teacher will be more prepared for their job, allowing them to become a better teacher.
