Problems for learners in china (10) english as a foreign language has been accepted in the educational field for a long time in china. It has been developing rapidly in the past ten years. Most schools including kindergartens and universities put a lot of effort and attention to english teaching. china is the most populous country in the world and has become the country with the most learners of english as a second language, thanks to so many enterprises becoming global. So many students don't mean they are all capable of mastering english well. However, there are a few common problems that arise quite often during english learning in china. First of all, most learners or students don't know how to verbally communicate in english. About 80% of schools in china have english class from elementary school to high school. Most students receive english classes for more than ten years before they go to college. Once the students graduate from college they still don't know how to communicate in english. The learners seldom open their mouths to speak english. They either lack opportunities to speak with native english speakers or the schools don't pay much attention to the importance of Spoken english. They usually end up saying something like, “My english is very poor,” with no other sentences to follow, after spending ten years of english study. This is a very common phenomenon among english learners in china. Second, learners focus too much on memorizing vocabulary. Most learners in china have the wrong concept of what is needed to learn english well. They strongly believe that they are able to do anything in english as long as they can recite enough english vocabulary. This creates a vicious cycle of cram schools and books emerging in the educational market to improve the learners english by helping them memorize as many english words as they can, resulting in more learners unquestionably thinking that memorizing words is the only way to improve english. Third, english learning in china focuses on passing exams rather than learning english for the sake of communicating. For most learners, especially young learners, they never use any english in their daily life; all they learn is to pass exams so they can get a good score to advance. Therefore, they only focus on studying testing material, preparing for weekly quizzes and exams. All they do is bury themselves in the test papers, never realizing the real reason for learning english. Both students and schools neglect that the real importance of language itself is to communicate, not pass exams. Last but not least, some learners tend to create their own “Chinglish” while learning english in china. They simply convert the chinese to english word by word, due to using a chinese mindset to think of english. For example: ???? (ren shan ren hai) is a chinese phrase meaning huge crowds of people in english. However, ? (ren) means people, ? (shan) means mountain and ? (hai) means sea, resulting in the student incorrectly saying, “People mountain people sea.” Some learners try learning english by literal translation, which is helpful for beginners to get a general meaning of words, but it doesn't always work well for effective long-term english learning. In conclusion, while english has become an important course throughout the education system in china, there is a lot of room for improvement both in the teaching method and content, as well as the students' purpose for learning english.
