Learning is a complicated process no matter what the age group. Therefore the method in which a teacher goes about correcting their student's mistakes plays a vital role in their confidence, motivation, and overall state of being calm and comfortable in a classroom environment. A teacher must know and be able to get to the equilibrium of when, where, how, and what to correct. Throughout the reading material pertaining to the tefl certificate training, the content leans toward a ‘relaxed' approach so as to not completely remove a person's motivation while still addressing important and key errors. However, what needs correction varies from subject to subject and for this particular piece I will be focusing on correction techniques in regards to teaching english as a second or first language. A first point to take into to account is the fact that there are a number of divergent opinions as to whether correcting your students errors are even effective and or beneficial to the learner. Nevertheless, for most classrooms, being corrected is the one of the only forms of feedback that the students receive and in that context play a significant role in a student having some form of tangible information regarding their progress or lack thereof. As mentioned in the first paragraph, they key elements taken into consideration when correcting are when, how, where, and what. However, these systems and theories are all based upon the thoughts and views of the linguist and the language teacher. Ergo, I have chosen a text that was focused upon the opinions of the students in comparison to their teachers and superiors. The results from the surveys given to various groups of students concluded that, ninety percent of the students agreed that error correction was vital to their ability to improve in accuracy and fluency of the language. Secondly, a good eighty percent of the students did not feel that constant correction was frustration or had any affect pertaining to their motivation to use and learn the language. Thirdly, that what required most attention and correction is organization, grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary; with little attention paid to spelling or punctuation. When the students were then asked as to who should be correcting what there was little to no interest shown in peer reviewed work, while twenty to thirty percent choose ‘self', and a majority opted for the teacher as the ultimate source of knowledge. At the end of the day it truly does not matter what a language teacher or a linguist thinks is the best method for addressing the errors of the numerous students they will have over the years. The most important thing to do and keep in mind is the needs and wants of the students, because each person is aware of what is harming their learning process or being beneficial. Therefore, the most important correction technique to keep in mind is to cater to your students and what they can tell or ask of you. Text: Error Correction in esl: Learners' Preferences by James A.
