As we are all individuals in life so are we also individuals as teachers, in my personal opinion there is not really a write or wrong way to teach a class. We all have our own ideas on how to approach problems , we all have our own personalities to of course every teacher will teach differently to the next teacher, some teachers are fun and full of energy, some are very strict with the students and feel more like a policeman than a teacher, other teachers are boring in class, and some are just normal. No matter what our in class personalities are we as teachers must all reach the one goal and that is to improve our overall student's language. But putting individual teaching styles aside there are certain teaching style categories: In 1996 Anthony Grasha identified four potential approaches teachers should have for a classroom. 1. Expert 2. Personal Model 3. teacher centered 4. Student Centered Moston and Ashworth (1986) defines teaching methods Style A - J 1. Style A - Command - teacher makes all decisions in the class. 2. Style B - Practice - Students carry out teacher-prescribed tasks. 3. Style C - Reciprocal - Students work in pairs: one performs, the other provides feedback. 4. Style D - Self-check - Students assess their own performance and work against criteria created by the teacher. 5. Style E - Inclusion - teacher planned. Student monitors own work. 6. Style F - guided Discovery - Students solve problems together with the assistance of the teacher 7. Style G - Divergent - Students solve problems without assistance from the teacher. 8. Style H Individual - teacher determines content. Student plans the programme. 9. Style I Learner Initiated - Student plans own programme. teacher is just an advisor. 10. Style J Self Teaching – This is the most extremet style of teaching and this is when the student takes full responsibility for his or her learning process. Now we have the 4 most common Teaching Style Catergories Formal Authority teachers who have a formal authority teaching style tend to focus on content. This style is generally teacher-centred, where the teacher feels responsible for giving and controlling the flow of the content in the class. teachers with this teaching style are not as worried with building relationships with their students nor is it as important that their students form relationships with other students. This type of teacher doesn't usually require much student participation in class Demonstrator or Personal Model teachers who have a demonstrator or personal teaching style tend to run teacher-centred classes with an emphasis on demonstration and modeling. This type of teacher acts as a role model by nearly always demonstrating skills and processes and then as a coach/guide in helping students develop and apply these skills and knowledge. Facilitator teachers who have a facilitator model teaching style tend to focus on activities throughout the class. This teaching style emphasizes student-centered learning and there is much more responsibility placed on the students to take the initiative for meeting the demands of the various learning tasks given by the teacher . Delegator teachers who have a delegator teaching style tend to place much control and responsibility for learning on individuals or groups of students. Students are often asked to work independently in pairs or in groups and must be able to maintain self-motivation and focus for the activities at hand. Students working in this type of setting learn more than just course specific topics as they also must be able to effectively work in group situations and manage various social roles.
