I have learned several things from this course. These things tend to fall into two categories. The first category is planning and the second category is grammar. The reason that these two categories are where I gained the most from the course are because I have been teaching efl for four years in the Korean public school system. Before that I had spent two years as a substitute teacher and eight years as an after school sports coach. In terms of classroom management and how to organize and operate a classroom I am more or less set. I still learned some things during those lessons, but the largest area of knowledge came from planning and grammar. In the grammar section I learned a lot. I learned why my english teachers did not like teaching grammar during school. I also learned how to effectively explain the differences between most the tenses and some of the harder issues of grammar. Before I took this course that was one of the hardest things associated with my job. My students or co-workers would ask me to explain certain grammar points, and some of their questions I did not know the answer to. I would try to explain as best as I could, but sometimes I just had to resort to the standby answer that english is a confusing language. I feel now that I could answer those questions effectively. Moreover, I would feel comfortable teaching all tenses to my students and have faith that I could effectively explain the tenses and teach them. When it comes to the planning aspect of teaching. I have never had to create a proper lesson plan for my courses. Most of the time the lesson plans that I had to create were very basic and really did not follow any certain form. After this course I understand how a lesson plan should look, and moreover know how to create a real lesson plan. The other aspects of planning that I learned from this class are how to create a more effective class. Through utilizing the ESA format I have a better idea of how to make my students experiences more complete in my class. I can make the class more student centric. Finally, I learned to have more confidence in my teaching abilities and in my teaching of grammar. I realized that while I may be set in some of my ways, there is still great information available to help me enhance my craft as a teacher.
