Taking this course has helped me deconstruct any preconceived notions I had about teaching english as Foreign Language. I assumed the students understood what I was saying, I rushed the class, and never thought to ask for feedback and seldom checked student understand. Taking this course has given me insight in what my students might be feeling (english can be very overwhelming), as well as steps to alleviate confusion in the classroom. The course has given my ideas and suggestions on how to engage the class. With each lesson that I've completed, I began to incorporate what I learned into my classes, for example the use of intonation. My co-teacher mentioned her impression from when I began to emphasis the use of intonation in class. She was reminded about the importance of using and emphasizing intonation and that by listening to the different ways to say a word it can change the entire meaning of a sentence. Another invaluable tool the course gave me was how to layout a lesson plan. The lesson plan is the backbone of any class; while it's okay to divert from the lesson plan, having a lesson plan on hand helps keep the class on track. I have also learned to also be realistic in my expectations and use of time when building my lesson plan. What most stuck with me was the necessity to think of problems before they arise, particularly with the way technology can act up. It is better to prepare beforehand as to prevent any future problems or complications. But, overall the course has assured me that no one is perfect, it's okay to try different things. It has also taught me that I can gain the confidence of my students by trying new things, being open-minded, and accessible.
