This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
To summarize what I have personally gained from this course I would have to divide that into two broad sections, entitled “Grammar” and “Challenging Myself”. The first section “Grammar” pertains to the fact that I previously found grammar to be very challenging and a sometimes indefinable area. However, after this course I have gained not only knowledge and confidence about working with grammar, but an infinite amount of grammar resources through the unit documents and from the external resources listed within. Prior to such, I had been researching on the internet to answers to grammatical inquiries I came upon and would either find conflicting personal insights or answers so cocooned inside Ph. D. rhetoric, that I could decipher almost nothing, and most certainly nothing suitable to be helpful to my explanation to an 8 year old student. These units are easy to understand and follow with example suitable for me and my classes. I feel confident that I can always use these units as a reliable rule checker and to re-teach myself grammatical guidelines when I forget.
The second section “Challenging Myself” is associated with a few different aspects. The first was my ability to challenge myself to even apply for this certification. I have been out of school for a few years now and have been doing little, outside of teaching, that I found personally testing. I finally decided to go back to “school” and further push myself in my area of work. It was a little harder than I expected after I whipped through the first couple of units and I personally had to relearn how to manage my time and focus on a long term project again. The second aspect of challenging myself came when I made sure that I was not just relying on my prior college training and teaching experience thus far to obtain my certification, but to really read and digest the units to learn more. As an educator it is important I never stop learning and taking for granted what I know, and I found that I was definitely able to learn a great deal about grammar a gain some ideas on classroom management and activities for the classroom which I am sure will be a great help in the future!
