This unit gives an in depth description of the International Phonetic Alphabet and how each of the sounds are formed. The IPA is a useful tool for teachers to and students to use when attempting to sound out words that have similar spellings but are ultimately pronounced very differently. The words 'beard' and 'heard' only have a one letter difference in spelling but sound completely different when spoken. Having a knowledge of the IPA will help students avoid confusing the pronunciation of these two words and countless others like them. The second part of the unit describes the different organs and locations of the throat and mouth used to produce english sounds. It then goes into the manner in which these sounds are articulated. All phonemes in the IPA are categorized under specific places and manner of articulation according to how their sounds are formed.
