Going into this course, I thought I would find it quite easy. I was proven very wrong! I figured that considering I was studying education, it would be a revision about much of what I had already learnt...Quite the contrary. I never received comprehensive grammar lessons at university, and much of what I learnt at school about grammar, I had already forgotten. So many of us speak, write and listen without thinking about the formal conventions of english. I had to relearn many of the grammar aspects and learnt so many new things about the english language. Some of the things I have learnt through my tefl course, I have applied in the Year 2 classroom I am on placement with at the moment. Not only am I glad I completed this course for when I teach overseas, it is going to improve my teaching of literacy in australia. The ITTT course is very well structured and having an online tutor is helpful for receiving invaluable feedback and answering any queries. I am hoping with the knowledge I have gained from the ITTT course and the experience I have gained in the classroom with my university degree, I will be competent and feel confident in teaching esl in a foreign country. Understandably, the unknown is nerve-wracking, but once I have had a couple of lessons with the children and understand what level they are working at, I'm sure I will be fine. I'm very excited to get out there and start teaching! I am leaving for South America in November, 2011 and will hopefully settle in china or hong kong to teach english for a year or two beginning October 2012. I will aim to volunteer in local schools whilst I am travelling to keep up my experience and confidence in teaching.
