Thanks to this course I've learnt to change my viewpoint. In fact, until now I've always been on the other side of the classroom! So, while reading particular units I've found myself thinking “oh really? Now I understand why!”. In my opinion being able to understand both the student's and the teacher's point of view is very important, as it enables to be more sensitive and to look for a more balanced lesson. Also, I've discovered the value of praising and eliciting! For example, two days ago I went to a friend's house to help his 12 years old daughter to prepare for an english test, and her mother told me that the girl's teacher gave her a low mark as an incentive to perform better. Actually the girl is very skilled so there were no needs to do such a thing! So, during the “lesson” I tried to do the opposite, being positive, eliciting and most of all praising her a lot. It has been unbelievable how she changed her mood after few minutes! She was proud of her and enthusiastically asked me to come again! I was very happy! And here's the point, I think that thanks to this course I found the self-confidence to go to that girl's house to help her. When you know nothing it's hard to seem self-confident, and when you don't seem self-confident people don't trust in you. During the last few months I've been trying to put into action what I've learnt by helping 2 girls with their homework but I would like to face a lesson with more than one student as soon as possible, possibly in East Asia.
