Throughout the course of this paper I will be speaking from a personally perspective. There are many reasons why I chose to do this tefl course but one of the main reasons was because I didn’t have much professional teaching experience in the classroom. Don’t get me wrong the company I’m employed to did provided initial training as well as continuous on the job training, observations and assessments. However, I felt that it was important to have a piece of documentation that says I’m qualified, I’m experienced, I know what it is I’m doing so listen to me. Additionally, having this piece of documents will make me more marketable as I will be able to market myself as certified tefl to other companies in my current country of residence and countries seeking Native english teachers. As well as increase the possibility of earning additional income as there are many job opportunities out there to be had and one of the most common question they ask is are you tefl certified. Also I see this as an improvement and another link in the chain of lifelong learning and investment in myself. Other reasons include the possibility of experiencing a foreign country in ways that I could never have had as a tourist to japan. I have gotten the opportunity to live amongst the people and share extensively in their many festivals, holidays, food, belief and practices. Overall I find the japanese people to be quite helpful and accommodating. They are always eager to help me and share with me about their culture as well as learn about mine. I sometimes feel a bit like an ambassador for my country (Go Team Jamaica). Once I say Jamaica the next thing they say “Bolto”. I’m speaking from experience when I say it is a rewarding feeling when you are able to make a positive impact on the lives of so many children. You enter the classroom and their eyes light up. Often times many find it very difficult to learn and speak english. They therefore shy away from it all together and try and avoid even making eye contact with you. Therefore when a child seeks you out and despite fear makes the effort to converse with you in english is a wonderful feeling. In conclusion, while there are difficulties involved such as being separated from loved ones. Having to deal with and cope with different cultural beliefs and practices, the natives’ daily diet which can be strange at times. As well as the challenges that may come along with your work environment and being able to teach the students in ways that they can understand and relate to. Thus far for me, the positives far outweigh the negatives of what completing this tefl course means to me and will make me more equip to achieve. In that I will have it for the rest of my life and it will makes me more marketable both inside the foreign country and other areas as well. And most importantly it teaches you to be a better teacher.
