This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
I have learned several different aspects of what it takes to teach english as a second or foreign language. First, I gained an appreciation for the complexity of the english language, and learned some approaches to teaching it logically and progressively. Second, I grew in my lesson planning skills as I practiced incorporating various stages into a class to ensure a variety of types of activities. This has helped me become more aware of the different ways of practicing a new language with ESA, patchwork, and boomerang lesson plan styles. Finally, I have learned to appreciate some the challenges that new learners will face, and how these struggles may be different for different ages, levels, and abilities of student learners. All of these skills will be directly applicable when I begin teaching esl courses in New mexico this coming fall. Seeing as I don't yet know which age group I will be assigned to work with, it has been especially helpful to learn about young, adult, beginner, and intermediate level learners throughout the course.
