I feel I have gained a great deal from this course. It has given me a greater understanding of the english language. Parts of speech and tenses are two areas in particular that native english speakers don’t really study in great detail. They are aspects of the language that we naturally understand having grown up with the english language. This course has required me to look at these aspects in greater depth and to think about how someone with no knowledge of the language must approach learning them. Grammar is an area in which I was never particularly strong. This is another area of the language that taking this course has helped me improve. Having studied a foreign language myself, I already had an idea of how I would approach teaching english. I am also married to a non-native english speaker and work with many other non- english speakers, so I have a good understanding of the difficulties people have in learning english and have a lot of experience in helping people improve their english. Taking this course has been great for discovering how to develop and apply this experience for use in a professional setting. Units 3, 5, 9, 10, 14, 15, 17 and 19 were especially beneficial for this. The main reason for taking this course was because of my wife, who is brazilian. Teaching english would be a great way to earn a living in brazil, especially for someone who is not fluent in Portuguese. I feel that this course has prepared me very well for doing this.
