While working through the 20 units of this course, I have learned a great deal. As I didn´t have any teaching experience nor theoretical background, studying the structure of a class, what to take into account when drawing up a lesson plan, how to deal with special students such as business people, and the grammar sections were very helpful to give me a solid basis for teaching english. It has also made me more aware of the theory behind structuring a class and the different ways to keep students motivated; the ESA format is very useful as a basis for every class. While I was doing this course, I also started teaching a few english classes a week, which added to my learning experience as I could put into practice the topic I had just studied. For instance, I noticed that my student had difficulties with the conditional and I just happened to have done that unit, so I prepared a class on the conditional, explaining the grammar, doing exercises and an activation activity. I was also relieved to read the unit about business english and the problems you could have teaching these particular students, as I was having exactly those problems: people often did not show up at class and they hardly ever had time to do their homework. I tried to keep the classes fun and varied to keep my students interested. Overall, I have learned how to structure classes, making them varied and fun, and fortified my grammatical background. So far, I have not been able to put all the units into practice, but I would like to have some more practice in explaining grammar, as I think that this is a very important part of learning a language in a structural way.
