On a practical level I’ve learned a lot: templates for creating lesson plans; variations on lesson plans; including flexibility when preparing; use of pairs and groups; when to engage, study, and activate; how to use teaching aids such as photos, cards, objects, etc.; using tools like DVDs, cassettes, and video recorders; dealing with issues such as flagging attention or disruptive behavior in the class. I’ve also learned a lot about grammar – verb tenses, use of clauses, passive and active voice, repeated speech, conditionals, and more. In addition to leaning the grammar itself, I’ve learned how to organize and present these grammar structures. Many ideas for exercises and activities have been included in the lessons, including specific games and techniques for various purposes and how to include them in the class. Related to this are suggestions for class dynamics – how to involve students, how to overcome reluctance to speak or participate, how to create confidence, how to maintain a positive attitude and keep students engaged. The need and usefulness of initial and ongoing assessment was explained as well on some suggestions about existing tests and creating new tests. I learned about how to incorporate a variety of authentic and created materials into the classroom and a whole list of sources for such materials. Teaching english can vary a lot depending on many factors as explained throughout the units: age of the students, motivation of the students, composition of the class (mono lingual or multi lingual), groups vs individuals, purpose of the classes (business, test preparation, education, travel), and level of the students. All of these factors will influence lesson planning and what goes on in the class. I learned about something I had known very little about - pronunciation & phonology. I had been aware of the 4 basic skills, but learned more about focusing on each one and techniques for teaching each. An important focus of the units was on interacting with the students – offering feedback, listening, being engaged and providing a sense of being interested, encouraging them, limiting criticism and emphasizing positive feedback, limiting use of native language, allowing them to experiment especially in Engage and Activate stages. In short, I learned how complex and challenging teaching english can be and the need for an approach combining practical techniques with innovation and flexibility.
