Teaching children can be a very rewarding experience for teachers, regardless of whether it is tefl or not. There are many things you can do in a classroom of young children that you cannot do with older children or adults. This can prove to be both challenging and exciting for many people. Many children, like those in kindergarten, do not have a choice or say in studying english – it is pushed on them by parents for various reasons. This can mean that you will have students who are reluctant to do anything in class. However, there are those who are naturally curious and excited to learn. children have their own issues at this age that the teacher must be aware of and try to adapt to. Kindergarten is the time that children are first separated from their parents, and is the usually the first time they have had contact with a foreign language. A teacher in this position must be sensitive to the needs of their students, as their interactions with them can have a profound impact on their lives and self-esteem. By providing constant encouragement, teachers can help guide a child through learning english with more ease. It is also essential that the teacher be warm and nurturing, to ensure the child feels safe and happy. There are also challenges that go along with teaching young children. Although children learn faster than adults, their attention spans are much smaller, and therefore they get bored much more quickly. It is important that the teacher stay on their toes by creating lessons that involve many different activities and games to keep the kids engaged. Singing songs, doing chants, coloring, and so on, are just a few things a teacher can incorporate in their daily teaching routines. At this stage, repetition is the key to success. By reinforcing what they are learning as you go along, a teacher will be able to help students retain the information they are processing. That being said, children are not ones to sit in a class and be talked at; kindergarten students need interaction and stimulating materials. By playing with things, students are much more receptive to what they are experiencing and being taught. Another challenging aspect of teaching english In a kindergarten is the idea that neither party – the teacher nor the students – will likely understand each other. As stated before, this will probably be the first time the child has encountered a foreign language. Thus, an impasse is reached. How does one teach a group of students they cannot effectively communicate with without using their native language? This aspect of teaching such a young age group can be the most frustrating for some teachers. However, it is possible with patience, perseverance and a lot of miming and gesturing. children are kinetic learners – they learn by doing. By incorporating physical activities, the teacher is more likely to get through to their students. Physical activities also allow the students to have fun, which motivates them and keeps them happy. Students this young are also natural parrots – they mimic many things they hear. Taking advantage of children’s natural ability to copy what they hear is a very usual tool to have. Teaching children has its own advantages and disadvantages; however, the benefits can often outweigh the bad. Simply seeing the look on a child’s face when you know they have completely understood something is a joy to see for any teacher. Their natural curiosity and desire to learn and have fun can be very exciting, as well. Finally, the bond between a child and teacher is precious, and the impact they have on one another can last for many years. So while there may be times where it is frustrating, there are many more times where it is the best feeling one can have.
