Lingua Franca , “A language that is adopted as a common language between speakers whose native languages are different” . As an english teacher, teaching in a country obsessed with education (South Korea), english has become the transportation in which parents have put their children, in hopes that the ride will result in a better social future for them. It can be argued that globalization has created the need for a common language and the cultural and economic power of the US put english in pole position to fulfill that need. We are now in an era where technology has made the world smaller. Socially, the people of the world are now much closer because of the advancement of computers, cell phones, and the Internet. Economically, businesses around the world rely on the fast paced innovativeness of these technological gadgets. english now has become more important in bringing the world together because of globalization. Every new student I have taught, I always ask them why study english? Their responses are mixtures of I want to get into a good school, I want to be rich, and I want to travel. All these responses connects to one thing—that english is seen as an elite club where only the smart and the rich come play. It is hard to understand how english has become the dominant factor in globalization. In reality, science and math have become the key subjects in driving technological advancements. The vital part where english plays a key role is the development in learning. According to a BBC article, a mother of a Malaysian student explains that studying Science and Math requires her son to be fluent in english . This explains the sacrifices parents make, especially in Asian countries. They commit a lot of their finances in order for their children to be successful in english, even though english is not their main goal. Furthermore, Communication also plays a key factor in globalization. This is also where english plays an important role. The technological advancements have made it possible for people all around the world to communicate. Because of this achievement, there needs to be a common language for people to converse. An article in the BBC perfectly explains why english has evolved, saying, “With the technologies of today, it's about communicating with others anywhere in the world in a matter of moments” . english has become the medium for different businesses across the globe to exchange and deliver information. english has allowed globalization to be versatile and fast paced. This influence in both economic and social spheres has given english a significant push in the direction of being the common language . As Thomas Shippey carefully analyzed, “Lots of people don't speak english, but it is very widely used in science and in finance, and it is spread even more widely through films and pop music. One can concede that this is pure accident, a result of American power and influence, that it says nothing about the inner nature of the language, and that it is bound to be temporary.” If someone had to pick one language to be the dominant way for people across the world to communicate, english would be at the bottom of that list. With its intricate grammatical system, to its volumes of vocabulary words (most of which are words borrowed from different languages), in deeper analysis, english is an awful language to be the common lingua. Because of America's deep influence in forays such as sports, entertainment, and even politics, english—American english— has taken over as the language to learn. Globalization and America's influence all over the world have both resulted in english becoming the language to learn. english is so important that in some countries, it is a vehicle for success, even more important than their native language. While the powers of english goes beyond just language skills, it is fair to ask whether this dominance will last forever.
