Teaching business english requires a slightly different approach to ‘standard efl teaching.' Groups usually have much more specific requirements, as the title ‘english for specific purposes' (ESP) implies. business english doesn't necessarily require a detailed understanding of business studies or how the groups business runs, although this may help when establishing the groups ‘needs analysis.' As with standard efl the beginning of the course should be designed to establish the student's interests, abilities and aspirations. Additional to this, a needs analysis is then conducted in order to indentify and prioritise the group's specific objectives. This can be done using a questionnaire or an interview. If the client's level of english is very basic then it may be a good idea to conduct the needs analysis in the client's native language if possible in order to accurately determine their objectives. Generally speaking, business english clients are usually adults who already have some understanding of english and are enrolled in the course in order to learn english specific to particular job-related functions. For example a needs analysis may indentify that the client's requirements for english include giving presentations, talking about technical job-specific issues, writing emails, understanding industry jargon. These job-related functions may change over the course and therefore it is important to keep the needs analysis up to date. Adults must work harder than children in order to learn a new language. Moreover, adults have already developed skills in their native languages that help them learn faster and more efficiently. These skills will make the process of learning business english much easier. business english focuses more on specific vocabulary, than on grammatical structures. In efl teaching all four language skills (listening, reading, speaking and writing) are equally required. In business english the needs analysis determines which language skills are needed the most. For example, the business english course may be focused on writing emails. business english clients often will not be paying themselves to do the course nor will they have made the choice to do the course. This, alongside the fact that business english clients are often very tired after or before a long day of work, makes motivation a challenging task. Having said this, business english classes are often small groups or one-to-one lessons, enabling the teacher to individual clients more attention. Lessons may need to be adapted, or the material shortened when dealing with tired clients. Smaller business english groups also mean a higher likelihood of cancellations. As with efl teaching is important to pay close attention to the progress of your clients, the company they work for may request an update on their development at any time. To summarise, business english is the specific use of english needed to conduct business in a professional manner. Globalization and the augmentation of international trade and international corporations is increasing the demand for business english. In general business english aims to provide clients with the skills to write emails, produce reports, make presentations, negotiate with clients, participate in meetings and conferences, write letters and deal with clients. Rather than focusing on general english for conversations and socializing etc, business english focuses on communication in business related situations.
