If you want to teach english as a foreign language, taking a tesol course is highly recommended, if not mandatory. Not only is being tesol certified a common requirement these days, but by taking a tesol course, you will learn how to become a more confident teacher with the materials that you learn throughout the course. Even though you may speak english as your first language, there are many aspects of the language that you may not understand. You may speak perfect english, but could not explain why you speak how you do. For example, when they are speaking about an action that you have done in the past, you automatically know to speak using the past perfect verb tense. Saying that, identifying that tense and knowing why they use it is often unknown by many. By studying a tefl course, you can learn more about grammar structures and verb tenses, which will only benefit you while teaching. It is important to understand why a certain tense is used, and how it is formed because this is what students will need to know when they are introduced to a new language. If you do not understand all aspects of grammar, how will your students? Another example of how tefl explains to you things that are often overlooked by native speakers are stressed and non-stressed words. The way words are stressed/ not stressed makes a large difference in the meaning of what you're saying. This is important to learn, especially for those new to the language. By taking a tefl course, we become more aware of these aspects of the language that, otherwise, are often overlooked. I feel the most important part of taking the tesol course, is how it prepares you for efficient and effective lesson planning. As you study tesol you will begin to see how lesson planning plays a very important role in the progress of your students. If you do not take your time to plan an effective lesson, your students will not benefit, and neither will you. By understanding the practice of planning, we can understand the different parts of a lesson (engage, study, activate), what their purpose is and how we can use them in the most effective way. Learning how to make a good lesson plan will help you to create a class that challenges the students, and keeps them engaged throughout. Along with lesson planning, another area that was focused on was the topic of resources and materials. If you have never taught in a real classroom setting, you most likely have a general idea of materials that are effective in lesson plans that get the most out of your lesson, and therefore students. In the course you will learn the various types of materials you can use (worksheets, objects, photos, video clips, games, games on powerpoint etc.) and how you can incorporate them into a fun and exciting lesson. tesol courses will encourage you to be more creative for your future lessons. As a teacher, you will always be looking for ways to improve your lessons, and make them more interesting, and relevant to your students, and I believe that taking a tesol course will lead you in the right direction. It gives insight into the parts of a lesson, where different materials and activities would fit well, helping you plan more effective and exciting lessons. Another important topic studied in a tesol course is classroom dynamics. This part of the course was extremely useful, especially if you have never been a teacher before. I have learnt how to handle a classroom in terms of student ability, how to motivate them, their personality, personal interests, and their age. tesol courses will give you tips regarding disciplining students and will help you to understand why they may be happening in your classroom. You will also learn the importance of student to student, and the teacher to student rapport. Also, a tesol course provides you with ways to improve and make both of these relationships positive throughout the school year. These dynamics will have a significant impact on your lessons, and as well as your relationship with your students. Overall, taking this tesol course, has helped me become more confident in my abilities as a teacher. All units in the course are relevant and will be used in my classroom. For those pondering a year abroad, or a career in teaching, would benefit from a tesol course.
