Learning disability is a general term that describes specific kinds of learning problems. A learning disability can cause a person to have trouble learning and using certain skills. The skills most often affected are reading, writing, listening, speaking, reasoning, and math. To describe the various categories of exceptionality, observers typically list the physical and psychological characteristics often exhibited by the individuals who make up that group. For example, early in the field's history a task force commissioned to identify the characteristics of children with learning disabilities (the term minimal brain dysfunction was used to describe these children at that time) found that 99 separate characteristics were reported in the literature (Clements, 1966). The inherit danger is the tendency to assume, or look for each of those characteristics in all children considered in the category. This danger is especially troublesome with learning disabilities because the category includes children who exhibit a wide range of learning, social, and emotional problems. Learning disabilities are associated with problems in listening, reasoning, memory, attention, selecting and focusing on relevant stimuli, and the perception and processing of visual and/ or auditory information. These perceptual and cognitive process difficulties are assumed to b the reason why students with learning difficulties experience one or more of the following characteristics: Reading problems, deficits in written language, underachievement in math, poor social skills, attention deficit hyperactivity, and behavioral problems. Putting it simply children and adults with learning disabilities see, hear, and understand things differently. It will lead to trouble with learning new information and skills, and putting them to use. The most common of the disabilities are: Dyslexia: when a person has trouble understanding written words. It may also be referred to as reading disability or reading disorder. Dyscalculia, When a person is having a hard time in math slogging arithmetic problems and grasping math concepts. Dysgraphia, a writing disability in which a person finds it hard to form letters or write within a defined space. Auditory and visual processing, sensory disability in which a person has difficulty understanding language despite normal hearing and vision. This is also known as LD. Nonverbal Learning/a neurological disorder originates in the right hemisphere of the brain, causing problems with visual spatial, intuitive, organizational, evaluative and holistic processing function. ADD/ADHD, while not considered a learning disability, can certainly disrupt learning. children with ADHD often have problems sitting still, staying focused, following instructions, staying organized, and completing homework. Autism, Difficulty mastering certain academics skills can stem from percussive development disorder such as autism and aspirers syndrome. children with this problem have trouble communicating, reading body language, learning basic skills, making friends, and making eye contact. It is very common for your child to have learning disabilities. 1 out of 5 children/adults has a learning disability. A fewer than 1 million children ages 6-21 have some form of learning difficulty and will receive special attention at school for it. For a child with these difficulties can and do succeed. It will be tough to face and it is hard to see your child suffer through these issues. You might even worry about the future of these children. But I can reassure you that the child is just fine and has a different way of learning. There just has to be some reassurance on both ends of the spectrum from the parents and the teachers working together to make it work.
