The two most valuable things I gained from taking this course was a better understanding of basic english grammar and how to teach it, and becoming comfortable and familiar with doing ESA lesson plans.
Before doing this course I knew I had a weak concept of the particulars of english grammar. Though I found some of the grammar units in this course the most challenging and tedious, I also found them to be the most beneficial. I’m thankful to have had to do so many exercises with grammar, because I’ve learned a lot that should be common knowledge for any english speaker and should be mandatory for any english teacher. I also appreciated the suggestions for reference guides. I will certainly pick up a few, and will have them handy for when I run into grammar questions in class that I cannot answer. I will be sure to instill a fundamental level of grammar knowledge in my students, using my new knowledge, the reference guides, and the teaching activities suggested in this unit.
I had a bit more familiarity with doing lesson plans before taking this course, but I had not been introduced to the ESA structure. I very much like the ESA method, and will certainly be using it to plan my real lessons in the future. I’m also grateful to have been required to do so many lesson plans, as they started to become less intimidating and more natural with practice. I still have a lot of refining left to do, but I look forward to testing my lesson plans in a real classroom setting and learning how to tweak them to maximum effectiveness.
The ITTT online tefl course has been a fantastic guide to becoming a better esl teacher; I look forward to using the skills it’s taught me, and the reference it provides, in a real classroom setting in the near future.
