Being a current esl teacher abroad in South Korea, I feel it is vital, educational, enriching, informative, and appropriate for any esl teacher teaching at home or abroad to do a tefl course. Many prospective esl teachers who are native english speakers believe that they are fully capable and knowledgeable in the english language to teach it. Like many, I too had believed it was not necessary to enroll in a tefl course since it is my primary language. It was not until I started teaching esl abroad for the first time in Korea that I found it necessary to do a tefl course. I believe there are many reasons to study a tefl, but I will discuss 3 major ones: 1) english language and grammar training; 2) Teaching ideas/activities; and 3) Teaching training. First, a tefl course would provide crucial english grammar training that “cannot be learned from main compulsory education.” In other words, this course would provide native english speakers with specific language concepts (e.g. tenses, reported/direct speech) that were not mandatory to learn so it is likely that they do not understand it enough to teach it since they were not required to learn it in their educational curriculum. I've experienced this personally as I was not taught in-depth about certain key grammar concepts (e.g. conditionals, perfect tenses, modals) during mandatory english courses. The tefl course provided me with a more comprehensive understanding of these concepts which is vital to being a resource and classroom “expert” as the esl teacher. The course provides necessary study of grammar which is needed by instructors to effectively and successfully mold future esl learners into fluent english speakers. Second, the tefl course provides a plethora of teaching ideas (e.g. seating arrangement, classroom management) and activities (e.g. games, materials, lesson plans) to maximize student learning and interest. The course provides examples as well as various online resources which are very helpful for young and veteran esl teachers. Also, the many examples for each of the teaching lesson concepts provide the teacher with a better understanding of key english grammar categories which would help in effective teaching. Third, this course provides vital and helpful teacher training for esl teachers. In order to become a good esl teacher, one must possess “theoretical preparation and teaching experience.” In other words, in addition to experience, a teacher must have tefl theoretical knowledge to become a successful teacher. This is important because it gives a teacher essential training in the field which is important as teachers are seen as expert resource guides to esl students and it is important to reinforce this belief by studying about tefl theory. Experiencing this first hand, I feel that the tefl course has provided me with the methodology and reasoning behind teaching english because it showed me numerous teaching techniques, psychology/sociology of student learners (from all levels), and in-depth analysis of all teaching stages (lesson planning, implementation, evaluation). Overall, a tefl course is necessary, relevant, and beneficial for current and future esl teachers. It provides the knowledge and understanding of the english language, teaching ideas, and theory behind esl. It gives teachers the skills and background on how to effectively teach esl students by maximizing resources, making logical teaching decisions, being aware behind teaching/language methodology, and understanding students' needs, issues, and challenges. I highly recommend this course to all esl teachers as it provides new clear, concise, and relevant material to best utilize teachers' skills and experiences.
