This format for teaching has several advantages and disadvantages. From the pupil's point of view, the one to one set up may seem to provide more ‘concentrated' teaching and from the teacher's point of view, this set up may be preferable to dividing up one's attention to several learners. What neither person may anticipate as a hindrance, however, is the weighty loss of the vital group dynamic in one to one teaching. Other disadvantages can also arise. As afore mentioned one to one teaching has many advantages. The teacher is not distracted by other learners and is able to provide a course plan that is specifically tailored to their one learner's needs. Any difficulties that the learner encounters will debatably be identified by the teacher quicker and be handled by the teacher with more concentration and efficiency. Times are more flexible within a one-to-one context as the two parties involved can decide on a time that suits both of them best to meet. This is likely very helpful if the learner works, has a family or is otherwise engaged in another time consuming activity. Often a teacher provides natural conversation for the one learner which is helpful in learning and forming more ‘everyday' efl speech. On the flip side, there are several disadvantages to the one to one teaching format. For example, partly due to the class times being flexible and only one person (i.e. the teacher) being inconvenienced if the learner cancels the class (as opposed to a whole group of learners being affected by a cancellation) the learner in a one to one set up is notorious for cancellations. There is less pressure and arguably less motivation to arrive when it is only two people involved. In addition, I would argue that the learner feels less like it's a “rigid” and traditional class situation in which participation is vital. From my own experience, I have often had individual students cancel on me. I think often students also take it on themselves to self-evaluate. For example, they may have a test coming up and therefore use the teacher more but when they are feeling less motivated they are quicker to cancel on an individual than to skip a class where their peers are present (and likely improving at a greater rate compared to them!). With relation to the peer issue is the issue of comfort. A learner on their own may feel more comfortable around peers. If a learner has no one to compare their difficulties with the english language to (other than their native english speaking tutor), they may become disheartened and disenchanted with their progress. A general group dynamic is also lost in a one to one set up – this dynamic is vital for injecting new ideas, participating in fun group activities, talking with people at a similar efl level to oneself and many other positive factors that learning in a group creates. In a one to one set up, the learner may have a set idea of what they feel they need to do in order to improve their english speaking skills. Although it is good for a student to become involved in their progress, it can become detrimental to their growth when they form inflexible ideas on what their learning needs are. For example, they may believe they only need conversational skills when in fact their grammar is inadequate. When in a group class, learners are forced to attack several fields and issues of the english language which is beneficial because hopefully every learner's range of efl is enhanced. One could argue that a learner in a one to one set up may feel they should have more say on their class plans as they are paying more, however, the teacher's professional opinion needs to be respected. Personally I feel that a one to one set up is not as beneficial as a group class. However I feel that it does have its value in specific cases, for example with a business man whose english is at an advanced level however he requires help in practising his fluency.
