When I first thought about taking this course I was not aware of the amount of knowledge and data I would be receiving. I was also not aware of the amount of work and dedication the course required. As the last six months progressed there were definitely moments of almost-defeat where I wanted to give up but the ending goal was always there to put me back on track. During those moments of doubt I would pull myself together and remind myself of the ending result: obtaining credentials to be able to teach english to Speakers of Other Languages all over the world. Along the way I have gained a deeper appreciation of the english grammar system not to mention a better understanding of what phonology actually means. One of the most valuable lessons I have gained is the proper way to organize and teach a class. It's amazing what you think would be the best way to go about teaching non-english speakers english and what ways actually work. After taking the course, I can't even imagine trying to go into a classroom without a lesson plan! Another aspect of the course that I am grateful for is the description of different student groups (children, business, big groups, individual, etc.) and the best methods to teach each. The last aspect that I have personally gained through this course is perhaps a bit of a selfish one; that is, I can put the completion of Teach english to Speakers of Other Languages course on my resume. Having this credential would not only expand my job opportunities but show employers that I have the dedication and drive to complete a course such as this one. On that note, I hope to take the knowledge and credential I have gained by taking this course to effect as soon as I possibly can. Of course having this course is appealing to any traveler and, indeed, when I decide to travel next I will do what I can to use this course in whatever way I can. I think it would be so much fun to spend time overseas teaching for a year. It could be even less formal than that. I've always imagined myself offering my teaching services to individuals for a shorter period of time. However, in the mean time I am stuck where I am in Northern canada and I can't see myself leaving any time soon. But this does not discourage my enthusiasm to use my new-found knowledge. There are many tourists that come to the North as well as many immigrants. I am sure there are more than a few of those who would love to take an english course. Starting here would be a great experience as I would be able to test my teaching ability on familiar and comfortable ground. It would also be a fun way to meet people new to canada and a great way for them to meet a local.
