Headlines like “
english as a global language” always glitter around the media whether it's a newspaper, magazine or TV. Though the era of British Empire has shrunk to few tho
usand miles but the
english language is ruling the daily lives of common beings from Los Angles to Delhi, Bengal to
london.
These are the kind of headlines, which are so obvious that most people wouldn't even give a second thought about
english being as a global language. Every country around the globe runs
english TV channels,
english Newspapers or magazines. Politicians, sports persons, TV and film artists use it when they deliver their speeches or interviews. Its spoken widely in travel and tourism industry, whether it's an airline or a hotel, it is the common language. Pick up the menu of a restaurant; you will see it there too. Though it is not spoken as a mother language apart from few countries like
england,
ireland,
australia,
usa etc but it has genuinely achieved a global status as it has developed a special role in many countries around the globe.
The reasons behind it are limitless, starting from the ruling of British Empire on most of the world to the role of American economy and western world's development, their attractive lifestyle, their role in world's politics or today's media etc. It has become a common bond among people around the world to communicate on one platform, which is
english.
Despite it has made relatively great marks all over the world but still there are many countries in East Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe or Arab world etc, where
english has traditionally had negligible influence.
There are many reasons behind this factor running from their closeness from outer world, their hatred towards Western world and
usa, their own strong culture or political reasons etc. Now this trend is changing rapidly, as these countries has realized the importance of
english as a global language, so they are very keen towards giving it a proper place in their own society.
The great example of it is the new emerging economies like
brazil and
china. Until recent years,
english was an alien language there but now it has become an integral part of their education system, their
business world and politics.
I put forward the example of
china as luckily currently I am staying here. Government and the private sector, both are taking great interest towards its flourishing. Every school and college has included
english as a subject in its curriculums. Road signs, restaurant menus, hotel bills, every government website etc are having
english language beside it. It is helping
businessmen to communicate with outer world, students to study in other countries, travellers to travel around the world. Every one is benefiting from it. I would like to mention here that
tefl trained
teachers are playing a great role in it. Adding their cultural and life experiences into these societies.
Though world is benefiting from its good effects but there are few drawbacks as well. It is dominating the traditional local cultures, affecting their lives adversely. Many local languages have replaced their own words with
english. It is becoming the symbol of social status.
In conclusion I would like to include that despite its mere drawbacks,
english has emerged as a global language and it is benefiting the world. World can communicate more freely and in a better way today.
