On www.dictionary.com under the word
teacher, it gives the definition as being ‘a person who teaches or instructs', and the definition of teach is ‘to impart knowledge of or skill'. Being a
teacher then from this definition is very wide ranging, and many people could be considered
teachers in many instances throughout their everyday lives if one individual or group of individuals is learning something from another person or group of people. As a
teacher in a classroom, the role of being a
teacher is more specific and comes with a slightly different set of pre-conceived rules and guidelines. To be more precise still, the principal and most very basic goal of the
english teacher would be to teach their pupils how to speak in
english. Going by the dictionary definitions mentioned above, the role of the
english teacher would be to impart his/her knowledge or skill of speaking
english upon the students in the classroom to help them in their learning experience.
To advance this very basic idea even further, it must be added that there are numerous considerations that the
teacher must take into account when he/she is to successfully fill this role. The
teacher must consider the level of
english that is spoken by the classmates both individually and collectively. The
teacher must consider the cultural backgrounds of the class that is being taught. The
teacher must consider the individual and collective difficulties encountered by the students when faced with the task of speaking
english. The
teacher must also consider the best way in which to overcome any issues or problems which may arise in the classroom environment. These are only a few considerations that the
teacher needs to think about, but they show that from the central idea of teaching
english there branches out a whole range of contextual issues and obstacles that the
teacher must be aware of if they are to fulfill their role correctly.
The role of the
teacher can also be better understood while discussing certain characteristics which come hand in hand in overcoming the obstacles relating to the considerations mentioned above. If a
teacher is teaching a class of five year old
children for example, the role of the
teacher would be very different to if he/she was teaching a class of teenagers. While the basic aim of teaching the class
english would remain the same, teaching a class of five year olds would require the
teacher to also take on the role of a parental figure in order to help engage the
children in classroom activities. If the
teacher was to treat a classroom of teenagers in this manner and speak to them the same way in which he/she would talk to a child, the
teacher would be taking up the wrong role in attempting to teach them
english. This is because there are many different sets of rules relating to conduct depending on the cultural and contextual environments in which the
teacher finds him/herself. The basic needs and expectations to be met while teaching one individual or set of individuals will be completely different for others. It could be argued that the role of the
teacher is not only based upon the knowledge that he/she has with regards to the different areas of knowledge (grammar, pronunciation, reading, writing etc) that form the basis of teaching
english. Aside from these areas there are also the interpersonal relationship skills which play a crucial factor if the role of the
teacher is to be a fully satisfactory one.
To sum up then, the
teacher's role needs to be very flexible. While it is important that the
teacher has a sound knowledge of all the subject areas that are being taught, the manner in which the
teacher is able to convey these ideas needs to be as flexible as possible. Flexibility implies a certain open-mindedness, and this openness can help the
teacher to take a more understanding and patient approach to teaching. It would be an approach which caters for the specific needs of their students in order to help them overcome their obstacles with as little difficulty as possible. If the
teacher is fulfilling their role correctly then it could be argued that the experience of learning
english in the classroom is not the only thing that the learners will take away from their studies. A successful
teacher has a vast potential to influence their students so that they can take their classroom experiences and adapt them to many other areas and walks of life.
