My objectives in doing a tefl/tesol course. 1. To improve upon the free lance work I am already doing in this field. 2. To improve my CV, in conjunction with an existing Scottish 3 year Primary Education diploma, for my application for residency in New Zealand. 3. To wake up my brain after an 18 year gap without studying. 4. As a personal challenge. What I have gained from this course. 1. I can relate the information covered by the course to my existing work load, particularly in ‘on site’ business english classes and in working with children where I have already started to use course methods and ideas. Teaching methods, guidance and resources are covered more explicitly by this course than anything learned at teacher Training College during the late 60’s, the era of ‘learning by discovery’, with little concrete guidance for beginner teachers or pupils. The course contained much common sense and each unit led curiosity to find out what came next. As yet, I’m not sure whether I will apply to work part time with an official language school or whether I’ll continue to work free lance 2. An online course on its own does not overly impress immigration officers, but will, I hope, be more useful if presented with existing qualifications and work experience during the course of 45 years. However, the chances of proving this are receding considerably, since New Zealand has recently changed immigration rules to put less wealthy applicants to the end of a 5-7 year queue. 3. The mental challenge of the course seemed enormous to start with, but with each passing unit has brought a little more confidence in my continuing ability to learn. The four months spent on this course have left me feeling more mentally alert and, after a short break, ready to embark on the two complementary courses, business english and young learners. I have learned so much about my own language and about the changes in spoken english over the last 50 years. In truth english is language of many sources, full of richness and beauty. I hope I can pass on at least some of that to students in the years to come. 4. The personal challenge has been engaged and conquered. My laptop and I have forged a new relationship. I sometimes get to win now. Working through three Sahara induced heat waves in succession up to 45o in the shade has in itself been a considerable challenge. The domestic burden has been greatly relieved by my husband who has supported me all the way, especially from the kitchen, where he has proven himself to be an innovative and excellent cook, as well as being my computer rescue service tech.
