The role of the teacher is a very important and crucial aspect of teaching students. How the teacher interacts and teaches his or her students can create successful learning, or it can create discord in the learning process of a child, leading to a lack of enthusiasm in the classroom, or even a complete dismissal of learning the topic itself. The teacher's role is engagement in the classroom, knowing how much teacher-student involvement is appropriate, understanding the student's needs, and giving and getting respect. Engagement in the classroom is very important to a teacher's effectiveness. The teacher should appear interested in the class and the student's involvement. Walking into the classroom, not making eye contact, not appearing to even be enjoying what one is teaching – basically a “ho-hum” attitude – is not effective engagement of the classroom, and the students will notice this. If the teacher is not properly engaged in the class, there is no reason why the students would be either. So it is important to smile, keep good eye contact, and let the students know the teacher genuinely cares about the class and about each student's individual learning. While it is very important to engage the students, it is equally important to know how much involvement a teacher ought to have with the students. More specifically, it is good to know how much interaction should be teacher-student oriented, and how much should be student-student oriented. It is the teacher's role to teach, however, too much teaching can be a bore to the class, and they get little other interaction to learn the language themselves in the classroom. It is important, then, that the teacher recognize that there is a time for the teacher to teach, and a time for the teacher to let the students to learn on his or her own. Another important role of the teacher is to understand the needs of the students. Some students will be further along then others. Some students will know more than others. Some students learn faster than others. Understanding these differences will make a very big difference as to how a teacher effectively teaches. It is important that the teacher respects his or her students for what they know, as well as a student's weak points in order to keep good rapport. Some students will need more attention, other students will need more discipline; whatever the circumstance is, the role of the teacher is to recognize these needs and help the student grow. Understanding the student's needs is a way to get respect from the students, but it is important that the students respect the teacher as well. This may be the most important role of the teacher. In the end, whatever the teacher does, it must be for the benefit of the student. Without keeping the benefit of the student's in mind, a natural void is likely to form between the teacher and the student, where there is a lack of trust and respect is reciprocated. Respecting your students and understanding that they have the ability to learn and grow from the course will create a natural respect. The most important role of the teacher is to respect his or her students. Overall, the role of the teacher can be defined as engagement in the classroom, knowing how much teacher-student involvement is appropriate, understanding the student's needs, and giving and getting respect to the students. While there are many other aspects to the role of the teacher, these are the most important, and the most crucial to effective teaching.
