I have gained so much knowledge about teaching english as a second language just by teaching it for two years, however, there are limits to the knowledge that you can receive by teaching along. Having the certificate can do so many things for you. There are many reasons to complete a tefl course. Some of the reasons include more english knowledge, better organization, ideas for activities, classroom management, and many others. One of the main reasons that I wanted to get a certificate in tefl was to increase my knowledge of the english language. Even though I may be a native english speaker, I do not always know the names of tenses or why things are the way they are. To me something just sounds right, but you can not explain it like that to a non-english speaker. You have to be able to tell them why so that they know when and how to say something correctly. Knowing what I have learned in the tefl course would have been very handy to have known before I started teaching. You can learn about english on the internet, but a tefl course provides it in a way that is meant for the esl teacher so that it can be used and understood in the classroom. I also wanted to take the tefl course to give me better ideas on classroom management, activities, discipline, and where to find quality websites and materials. These are things that I have learned over time, but there is so much information out there. Having a professional for guidance becomes so important. I wanted to be able to learn from people who have taught before and know what works and what doesn't. I have always gotten ideas from friends, co-workers, and the internet, but I needed to know what the standard was for esl teaching. I wanted to be able to teach a class that was equal or better than the standard that was expected from an english teacher. An example of something that is standard for a high quality teacher is one who uses lesson plans. I was never taught how to make a lesson plan and never had my own outline to use for one. I now have one and am able to use it to help me plan and think through what I am going to do for classes. I always knew what I was going to do and how to do it, but this helps to keep me much more organized than I originally was. It also looks far more professional to have a lesson plan written and I believe that it gives students more confidence in the teacher if he/she looks prepared. Plus a tefl helps you be able to teach in a variety of countries. If you do not have one, then you are severely limited to where you can go and teach. It's even difficult within the united states to teach without a certificate at an esl school. I love the fact that I was able to go to japan and South Korea, but there are so many other countries that I want to see and most of them require a certificate. I do not want to limit myself because of a lack of education. If you want to do something, then you should study how to do it and do it correctly with as high of quality as possible.
