In the past 4-5 years I have had several short term experiences of teaching esl. I volunteered to serve with a group from my church to lead a one week english Camp in Taiwan for three summers. Last year I volunteered to help teach a community esl class in my community. So I taught one class a week for about 9 months. I had studied some on my own, but I had never taken a formal certification class for esl. As a result of taking this class here is what I have gained: 1. A good beginning grasp of grammar that is taught in esl. The verb tenses were especially helpful and much more difficult than I anticipated. Areas such as reported speech, phrasal verbs, conditionals, and modals were also very helpful and I am gaining confidence that I have the knowledge and resources to be able to teach these topics in an actual class. 2. A Foundational basis for creating lesson plans I have created lesson plans before for a variety of teaching situations. The ESA Strategy with the addition of boomerang and patchwork gives me an outstanding foundation for creating lesson plans on a regular basis. I think I have learned the purpose of this strategy and what is supposed to take place in each section. Wherever I teach in the future, I will mentally go to this strategy as I begin planning lessons. 3. An abundance of resources throughout that I can use in the future I have highlighted and circles many resources within the chapters of material. These will be available to me when facing most any situation in a classroom setting. 4. Binder of all materials and my work that I can review for future use. I have kept all of the chapter materials as well as my worksheets and written lesson plans. I will use all of this again and again when I am able to teach in a live classroom. 5. I learned that I like this – My first venture into formal training with esl was online (less expensive) because I wanted to test the waters. Would I really enjoy the studying, reading, writing, and completion of assignments? I found that I really enjoyed the assignments and even preparing lesson plans. I found out that teaching esl is something that I really want to do. It may be teaching in my local community, but I hope to be able to take this knowledge and certification and teach in multiple international settings sometime in the future.
