Why Complete a tefl course? During my time in America, studying at a liberal arts college, we were constantly probed with the question: "how will I make my degree work for me?" This has been a question that has followed me during my four years of study. Throughout the years I began to understand myself better and knew that I was attracted to the academic world and the world of education and schooling. As an english major I knew from an early stage that I wanted to pursue a career in english teaching, more specifically as a second language. But just because I had an english degree did not mean I was ready for a full-time tefl teaching position. This became the main reason why I chose to complete a tefl course. Having now completed the course I do not know what I would have done without it. The following paper will outline the few major reasons why myself and anyone looking into teaching english as a second language should complete a tefl course. Initially I thought that having experience inside a classroom teaching and observing, as well as having an english degree would be enough. I was sadly mistaken. A tefl course helps you to realise the specific needs and requirements of non-native speaking students. It is great in teaching classroom management and teaching techniques, but more importantly it focuses the education toward a completely different style of teaching. The course helps you to realise the drastically different environment and structure of the tefl classroom. The course develops the necessary lesson planning skills and provides ample knowledge on second-language students. It teaches the importance of not lingering too long on one activitiy, switching up the activities and tasks, as well as hammering all four essential learning skills. Non-language teachers often focus too much on a teacher to student, lecture-style classroom and forget about creating diversity and flexibility in the classroom for the students. More specifically, it also demonstrates a structure and flow of the lesson suited to teaching a second language. A structure that varies to a standard classroom environment. Another thing we often forget about the english language is how complicated and complex it is. As native speakers the tenses and peculiarities of the language come naturally to us. We've come from a natural language acquisition of english where the use is inherent. The grammar and teaching grammar units of a tefl course are indisputably the most helpful units of the course. When we learn grammar in our schooling we do not go nearly as in depth with our tense use and structure as one would in a tefl class. The importance of re-learning our own grammar rules is imperative to the success of a tefl teacher. Completing a tefl course arms you with the basic grammar knowledge, structures, and teaching methods that you will not learn anywhere else. An additional benefit of completing a tefl course is the hands on approach to lesson planning. When working or volunteering in classrooms you are often placed alongside a professional teacher. They are the ones who have planned and designed the lesson and you are often an aid to their methods rather than having actual input on the lesson itself. A tefl course gives you the hands on approach of designing your own lessons. It may not provide you with a class to experiment on, but the tutor and feedback is extremely helpful and important. No one is ever going to know if a particular lesson is going to be perfect for their students and it is not until the actual moment of teaching that you can test this out. The feedback and work of having to create and design your own lessons and have them critiqued provides that confidence and steers you in the right direction. A lot of people think they can just jump head first into the teaching world and some probably succeed well with this, but the confidence and preparedness a tefl course provides for a beginner teacher is undeniable. The skills, knowledge, and more importantly the confidence that a tefl course can give a beginning teacher is probably the best first step anyone could take toward a teaching career. Personally, it has armed me with set of skills and knowledge I can take with me wherever I go and any person who is considering becoming a tefl teacher should look into taking a tefl course.
