This course has given me valuable insight into the challenges that might be encountered in tefl and many focused techniques I might apply to meet those challenges. Although I have some experience in teaching and quite a bit of experience in speaking to groups and leading group experiences, there have been many fine points that have been sharpened in my mind regarding the underlying structure of designing learning situations for tefl students. Probably the most important structure for me was the understanding of the Engage-Study-Activate concept of lesson planning and its variations. It’s likely that I have used this technique unknowingly in the past, but having learned the functionality of the design, I can certainly see myself building all of my future lesson plans on this structure. In addition, I gained perspective on teaching styles and techniques. Watching the video showing a good style as contrasted to a poor style was very informative. I watched it several times. The challenge, of course, is to apply the skills in the daily regimen. Understanding what is engaging and seeing it work is an important starting point. I will likely video many of my first lessons to make sure I am not the teacher with the poor style. In order to be more engaging, I’ve learned from the course some great resources for creating games and exercises that can make learning more fun. I’ve learned the value of gap-fills, word matches, hangman, and other such activities that can enhance the classroom and the learning process. I will certainly be using these resources as I go forward into classrooms. Finally, I must admit that after being a native english speaker for over 55 years, I found myself deficient in my knowledge of certain grammatical structures. While I generally speak properly and use these structures correctly, I have, over time, lost some of the formal understanding of the names and usages of some of these forms. It was beneficial to me to re-visit my basic grammar and re-learn english structure in a more formal way, for only through having absolute confidence in my understanding of english usage can I effectively teach students who are encountering for the first time a language that is at once sensibly structured and frustratingly complex. As I go forward, I will make sure to focus time on reviewing the fundamentals of each part of grammar I will be teaching to thoroughly crystallize my understanding and my ability to be a good manager of learning.
