Unit one was looked at the various elements that make a good teacher and the teacher's role in the classroom. It went in to some detail on when it is appropriate for the teacher to choose which role and why. I found this section interesting since I am currently a outdoor guide and instructor. It was valuable for me to see that the elements of teaching I use in the field are also valued in the classroom setting. The unit also examined the behavioral patterns that make for good students as well as the reasons people may take an english course and the pros and cons of various demographics of learners. Generally speaking it is assumed that adults are more motivated learners but also have more hindrances regarding performance and anxiety where as a younger learner is more willing to make mistakes but likely has a shorter attention span.
