This section covered two important topics: the conditional and the difference between direct and reported speech. There are several types of conditionals and they differ in meaning and which verbs are used. The zero conditional is used to state facts while the first is used to talk about a probably future situation. The second conditional talks about an improbable future situation. The third conditional talks about a hypothetical improbable past action. The mixed conditional talks about a hypothetical past action and a hypothetical present consequence. Students commonly mix up the tenses used in the different conditionals.
