This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
I feel that the course was very good at giving me an idea of some
of the things I may need to know when I go to another country
to teach english. In the course booklets I learnt of some of the
problems I may encounter. For example the difficultly, I may
encounter, between a monolingual and a multilingual classes.
I feel the course was heavy on grammar and could have talked
more about the difficulties that Asian people find with pronunciation
and ways to help overcome the problems. I have been helping
on courses in Gulmi, nepal, where I have been helping nepali
english teachers learn to speak english. I have mainly been used
in helping with the correct pronunciation. I have found as I learnt
a little nepali that they speak very fast, compared to english, and
so when they want to speak english they still try to speak fast and
then find it hard to pronounce the words. So I have told them to
slow down and speak english very slowly and to their surprise they
can speak far better than they could before. So little tips like this I
feel would be very good.
I think what I have relay learnt is not to worry and to take your
time and enjoy the learning with the students. Also to have fun
and keep looking for new ideas to deliver english language in the
classroom.
